Public speaking is not only about the words that come out of one’s mouth. It is also crucial to pay close attention to body language. Many people get very nervous before preparing a speech. That is perfectly normal and can actually help in delivering an effective speech. However, the presenter should not let nerves overcome the strength of the message. Ten public speaking tips can help a presenter get the message across and keep an audience captivated.
1. Captivate the Audience
The first thing a speaker will want to do is get the audience’s attention. Many people recommend beginning with a story. Humor is another good way to get people to pay attention to a speaker’s message. In general, the idea is to relate to the audience, so it is often best to use an informal, conversational tone.
2. Be Prepared
The worst mistake a presenter can make is delivering a speech that has never been rehearsed. It is best to practice the speech several times over. Also, most conferences or other public speaking forums will have implemented time limits. A good way to be ready for those limits is to use a timer while rehearsing a speech. Allow a little less time for your speech than the organizers do. This way there is time for a question and answer session.
3. Make Good Use of Body Language
A speech may have great content, but if a speaker’s body language does not show confidence then the message cannot be delivered effectively. A speaker must exude confidence in their message. This is where it is important to get those nerves under control. One way to do so is to be sure to get to the location earlier. Arriving at a venue early ensures that all technology is working properly and that the presenter is familiar with the surroundings.
4. Be Aware of the Target Audience
Every speech has a target. Know what the goals are for delivering the speech. It is likely that a speech will be given at a conference and the organizer has goals in mind. Be sure to take them into account when preparing the speech. Most of the time the aim will be to educate an audience, share information with them, and entertain an audience.
5. Don’t Let Technology Get in the Way
It is a good idea to have a printed copy of the speech, along with an electronic one. One very important aspect of public speaking tips is to not let technology detract from a person’s presentation. PowerPoint can be very useful, but can also be a hindrance. It should only be used for illustrating a point, not for showing the text of a speech.
6. Know the Speech Well Enough to Avoid Reading from Notes
Although it is okay to look at notes occasionally, one should try to memorize the majority of the speech. If a speaker is consistently looking at notes, then the audience will have a hard time hearing. It is hard to enunciate when reading from a page.
7. Be Confident
A nervous person can also be confident. The energy and adrenaline that causes nervousness can also help a person seem excited about a topic. It may even get them excited. Taking time to relax is also a good way for speakers to create confidence within themselves.
8. Get those Nerves Under Control
Take a deep breath and count to three before addressing the audience. Be aware that the audience is looking for a presenter to succeed. People at these conferences are there to learn something.
9. Be Aware of Time Constraints
When practicing at home use a stopwatch. Cut the speech down to fit those time constraints and allow a little extra time at the end. Do not use an extraneous words or repetitive sentences.
10. Connect with the Audience
Look at the audience directly when addressing them. Speak loudly and persuasively. Do not get bogged down in a prepared speech. If it is not working the way it was intended, be flexible and make changes where necessary.
It can be very simple to deliver an effective speech. However, it is still very intimidating for many people. To gain confidence and present a strong speech, work on calming down and being prepared. Following the ten public speaking tips above is a good place to start when preparing to give a speech.
